Burton's No. 31 crew sets Pit Crew
Challenge record
|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 14, 2009) – Eliminating mistakes drives victories in Sprint
Cup competitions. With pitstops, mistakes instantly translate into lost seconds,
leading teams to focus on perfecting stops to give them an advantage. For five
years, these skills have been showcased at the Pit Crew Challenge. And the No.
31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet team of driver Jeff Burton put on a show
on Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Arena, winning in record fashion.
Burton's over-the-wall crew of gas man Curt Bowman, catch-can man Andrew
Childers, front-tire changer Daniel Blizzard, front-tire carrier Jon Wallace,
rear-tire changer Terry Spalding, rear-tire carrier Chris Martin and jackman
Adam North completed their respective skills and the 40-yard car push in 22.115
seconds, an event record, to defeat the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Dodge
team of driver Reed Sorenson in the finals.

In order to best serve its contract packaging customers, it was imperative that P&G be able to get the new PKB packaging line up and running at full speeds without any unnecessary delays.
At P&G’s suggestion, PKB used a 20/20 Hindsight high-speed video recorder leased from Monitoring Technology Corp. (www.2020hindsight.com) as a diagnostics tool during the vendor acceptance testing of the new packaging equipment.

A closer
look at machine building

What’s the best way to debug and commission high-speed packaging equipment? Not
with a camcorder, apparently. At least that was the lesson learned at MGS Machine
Corp. (www.mgsmachine.com) recently when director of operations Mike Verdon and
colleagues began using a Hindsight minE 20/20 high-speed camera system from Monitoring
Technology Corp. (www.monitoringtech.com) as a means of reducing lead time on machine
delivery...

Fifteen years ago, a leading drug manufacturer began using a high-speed camera on
some of its packaging lines to research and solve problems. It gave the packaging
team a precious 16 seconds of recording time at 1000 frames per second. Even with
this limited amount of recording time, the technology enabled them to find and correct
a multitude of inefficiencies...

Packaging specialists, like Don Stevens at the Miller Trenton facility, work to
minimize downtime whenever possible. Fortunately for Stevens, he and his crew have
a new tool in place designed to help minimize the downtime associated with investigating,
diagnosing and rectifying line problems. The 9.5-million-barrel Trenton facility
recently aquired Monitoring Technology Corporation's 20/20 Hindsight gigE high-speed
camera system.

When "gremlins" plague a packaging line and threaten to compromise efficiencies,
manufacturers can also turn to a video recording of the production line to determine
the root cause of quality and production issues, says Jim Dechman, president and
chief executive officer, Monitoring Technology Corp. (MTC), Fairfax, Va. "It's
good to catch an issue before it ships to the consumer, but it is better to fix
the problem permanently so it doesn't happen again," he says.

Solving production and quality issues requires the ability to actually see the problem
occur. With today's high-speed equipment, staring at a suspected problem area waiting
for a failure and then guessing at corrective action is both inefficient and time-consuming.
20/20 Hindsight eliminates wasted time and money by utilizing a patented technology
to record digital video while storing up to 48 continuous hours, even while simultaneously
reviewing previously recorded events.

When Monitoring Technology came up with 20/20 Hindsight, Dechman knew that it would
work for packaging. "The system is designed for easy use on the line 24 hours a
day," he says. "It is another set of eyes that a production or maintenance person
can use to quickly determine the cause of jams or off-quality production. They just
point the camera at the problem area and walk away. After the equipment jams, they
scroll back through the video and replay the jam in slow motion. No wiring is required."
